What a weekend...
Got an invite last week to ride and everyone knows thats just hard for me to pass up. DJ was going to have to ride alone on Saturday till a couple others could show up for the last two days of riding. So not to let him go riding alone I was all loaded up and ready to go after work on Friday afternoon and I headed South. Met up with DJ along I-81 for dinner at Burger King & a re-fuel stop to fill the quad, flat pack on the quad and extra gas cans to get through the weekend. We took our time heading South then West out 64 to Beckley, then crossed the moutain roads over to Mullens and climbed Bud Mountain to RCH Lodge. It was late and all we wanted to do just to unload everything and get some sleep. Seemed like morning light came as fast as I fell asleep, woke up and we had a visitor at the back porch while fixing breakfast and we finished up and was anxious to get riding.
The only plan we really had was to ride the entire length of the new connector from Pinnacle Creek trail over to the Indian Ridge trail and come out through Indian Ridge to have lunch at the Coal Camp Cafe.
Had the cheeseburger a few weeks back and couldn't really even recommend it to anyone else, but we spotted the lunch specials as chicken or lasanga and asked which was better. She said try the lasagna which was a good choice with a salad and garlic bread included.
After lunch we fueled up at the Ashland campground before heading back out for the afternoon.
We came across this persons very neat & clean little cabin that really liked the Halloween spirit.
We finished out the day with approx. ~ 75 miles round trip from Bud Mtn. BBQ sandwiches and baked beans for dinner.
BK550 & Jay joined us the next morning and after Bobby & DJ had a little friendly sausage gravy breakfast competition we were off.
The plan was to head out towards Welch for lunch since neither of those two had ever been to the Sterling Drive Inn.
(Fine with me, I was looking forward to a Double Dog Platter)
Back over the mountain past the junction and down the connector in time for dinner. 65 mile day.
Baked BBQ pork chops in the oven and baked beans with homemade macaroni salad by Jay.
Next day after another big breakfast we took off towards Welch in another direction to have lunch at KFC.
Well we got there a little quicker then we thought so lunch was right at 11 AM. (Fine by me again)
After lunch we tried out a new trail that I had never been on but had a track for... Very nice.
Approx. 82 miles for the day, just a little rain late in the afternoon, but we still made it to Mullens & back before dark.
Jay, DJ & Bobby on the front porch of RCH Lodge. BK550 was the "Potato Peeler" for dinner.
Cheeseburger, hot dogs, fried potatoes, corn on the cob, macaroni salad was all very good.
