WV Trip March 18-21

Day One
OK so Pineville trip over the weekend had a great time and got in a good deal of riding. There was lots of activity at the trail head for a Thursday morning three rangers and some maintenance guys. One of the rangers came over and eyeballed us for a few minutes checked our trail passes and asked me if there was beer in the cooler. I said that cooler right there? He said yeah! I said yeah it’s full of beer! He kind of eyeballed me again and I added we aren’t drinking and we aren’t taking it with us. He walked of shaking his head then turned and said you better lock it up in the truck or someone will walk off with it.
So road about 85 miles Thursday little bit of Pinnacle Creek. 23 was closed from main road in 10? I think to 88 logging that section. So we went up and around to 11 in to Mullins to go on some mining land we ride over there. We have a key to the gate but it was open and a security guard ran us off. Said there was new mining there we had to stay out for now. So road down to Bud and up the Mtn. to the view and on to Keystone Indian Ridge to Ashland the cafe was closed we were hungry Wagon Wheel was the only thing we could find. I had never been in there before “Quaint” comes to mind. The creeks were up at the WW. So went back Herndon Heights road. Did cross the creek at the end of 23 but an RZR almost washed downstream had to jump in the cold water with a winch line and drag it out. Due to a mess up at Happy Trails our cabin was occupied by someone other than me “pissed” comes to mind but ended up with a 5br 3bath house for $130 a night OK better now.
This is why I don’t do these reports I’m too long winded in my story.

So true G Bob and maybe when he sometimes writes
"do you have any pics,"
he is looking at the food in them as much as the scenery.

OK so day two
Just three of us stayed at Happy Trails and we were waiting on two buddies from home to show up around 10. We walked across to the Executive to get breakfast and drink coffee until they showed up it was a little cold anyway. Not one of us could get any cell phone service and the lady working the counter said that she couldn’t let us make any long distance phone calls. The manager let us call our buddy on his cell at about 10 and they were just outside of Beckley I just happened to give him the phone number so he could call us back at the restaurant and 5 minutes after I got off the phone he called back “flat on the trailer”. We spent the next two hours in the Executive casino playing slots and black jack.
So they arrive at about noon and off we go, one of them had never been to WV before so he was eager to see what it was all about. Road about 45 miles on Pinnacle Creek and came in to the house to cook out. They had brought deer loin, chicken breast and potatoes and we cooked and had a few of the beers the ranger had wanted.

Working on some pictures I didn’t take very many but I will get them up.

Day three
Admittedly a little hung over from the night before (why do I ride with these guys there such a bad influence) we sleep into about 8. Walk over to the Executive to get some breakfast they tell us they don’t have a cook until 10. Didn’t I just eat breakfast here yesterday at 8:30? So we go up to the Cow and have a bit to eat. Then out to ride we were going to ride the wheel but the logging crew was blocking the trail (don’t thoughts guys take a day off) so up to the view and over to keystone we ride Indian Ridge. Trails are in good shape but coming in on the town connector there was a lake in the center of the trail. Nice clean water running off the hill side and into a three foot deep hole. Feet up and go on through odd site though. Ride on and up to the stair steps there are a few there (stupids we call them). Back down to Ashland for some grub at the Coal Creek Café. Ashland ATV resort for gas and back to Pinnacle Creek we ride until about 9pm and come out into town. Just as we round the corner to go into Happy Trails there is a Pineville cop that had just pulled over about 10 atvs blue lights flashing. We round the corner and park outside of our house. He follows us to the house but doesn’t stop us. Talked to the guys he pulled over he didn’t give any tickets out. Just reminded them of the law and told them to be safe. Nice guy WOW!

O yeah we did try to ride the connecter trail but got lost and it was getting dark. Went in from the North Fork side the trail we ended up on was taking us back to Crumpler.

Hey, DJ...I shared the "that cooler right threre?" portion of your ride report with some of my buddies at a surprise BD party last night. They loved it!

Law enforcement officers just aren't trained to get humor like that. Guess they can't. They've seen the outcomes of combining alcohol and engines. But, I would bet that when he went home and talked about his day at work, he got a chuckle out of your response.

He didn't seem too awful amused at the time but I bet your right. I wasn’t really trying to be a smart a** just telling him the truth; it did sound like that when I ran it through my head later however.

What law did the cops remind the 10 ATVs about?
No riding after dark since it was 9 pm?
