Clunk

Well what do you do when you're not riding. Fix your quad. My front diff on the Grizz had been leaking gear oil after the last couple of rides. Which would have been last Easter thru the 4th of July. So I finally replace the oil seal, not a bad job to do. So last Sunday I get it put back together take it out for test spin to make sure it's not leaking. No leak cool, wait what the heck. What's clunking?

I have SBR get on and turn and go slow as I follow trying to listen for the sound. Yep every so often a clunk is heard from the rear end.

CV Joint, Wheel Bearing, Rear Diff???? Anybody know any ways to diagnose the problem, without replacing parts that don't need replacing.

I heard the same kind of noise from the RZR after it has sit for a long time. I found mine to be the rust on the rear rotors from sitting. Ride it for a ways and apply the brakes a few times and it's gone. That's the best I can help with for now.

I had a similar noise from the left rear hub...
thought it may by a wheel bearing since there was a little "wheel wooble".
Looked on my parts shelf to find a set of PivotWorks wheel bearings ... ?

Since this was the least amount of miles between bearings I decided
not to use the PW again, wasn't too happy with the All Balls brand either.

Don't hear the clicking / clunking noise anymore and one side of the inner
bearing race was completely seized up on the left rear hub bearing.
So... Ol' Red Grizz now has new life from Kawa Teryx bearings, we'll see

i have an 03 grizzly which is famous for spitting out cv joints and axels sounds like the cv joint but if you took the avel out it could have been you put it back in an it in a bind take it back out an make sure you dont twist your cv reinstalling it

I haven't pulled an axel out yet. I fixed the oil seal on the FRONT diff where the drive shaft goes into the diff. The noise now is from the BACK left. If I need to replace an axel I'll remember not to twist it.

the axel in mine has been clickin so i took my cv joint apart an put grease in it an it stoped but if your just started an youve never took it out its porbably getin ready to break an a word of wisdom DONT buy a monster axel they sell them on ebay an a few other places they have a 1 year waranty but youll have to send them back cause there junk there 125 to 130 on ebay i think the cv man sells them your best bet is payin 250 at a yamaha dealer an get a factory one hope that helps if you have any problems let me know ive got plenty on grizzlys

Gonna have to disagree with you redneck... I put two on Jo's Kodiak and 1 on my Brute force and they were working fine when we sold them. Maybe you're harder on stuff that we were

i only put 250 miles on the last axel an it broke into i havent pulled anything or rode it hard the first axel wouldnt seal up it was egg shaped were it goes into the diff idk maybe they just sent me all the returned axels but personaly ill never buy an axel from that company again

Well I pulled both rear axles. Splines look good. Bearings in the hubs are okay. Is there a way to tell if the cv joint is bad WITHOUT tearing off the boot?

You dont have to tear it off. If you loosen the clamps on the boot you can slide it down the axel to see the cv joints. I'm not sure that even with looking at them if you could tell if they were bad or not.

jack the back of the grizzly up with a floor jack make sure your in 2wd put it in high an give her some gas other than that no id take the boots off but im like gbob if theres no shaveings idk but one of the balls in the cv joint maybe tryin to come out of the cage

Well it wasn't the wheel bearings, pressed out the old ones put new ones in. Ran again with the same axles, same old clunk. Tore into the 550 Grizz pulled those axles put them in my 700 hey no clunk. So the cv joints must be bad in atleast one axle. So now I'm going to order a new pair. Just glad to find the problem.

Could have been worse G. I could have thought it was a bad cv, then ordered new axles put them in and still had a noise and been out the cash that I didn't need to spend on the axles.
