I'm working on a new FAQ webpage and solicit your input. Everybody has questions. I want to try to answer the most common ones for both Hatfield and User Defined Trails. This is what I have so far...
Let's start with Hatfield McCoy since they routinely clean their board forcing new members to post the same questions over and over again.
Q: Are permits required?
A: YES. HM trail permits are for the USER, not the machine. Each USER must have a permit. If you have 4 riders in a big SXS, that means you have 4 permits. They are $50 per CALENDAR year for out of state riders. WV residents pay about 1/2 that. Whether you buy a permit in January or August, it will expire December 31 of the year indicated.
Q: License / insurance needed to ride the trails or go into town?
A: NO. WV law is surprising PRO ATV/UTV. Municipalities have the right to make their own rules though. Usually this means they designate certain routes inside their jurisdictions. This gets you to fuel and food, but maybe not the movie theater.
Q: Helmets required?
A: YES. (period) All USERS must wear a society approved helmet.
Q: Guns OK?
A: NO firearms are allowed on the trails.
Q: I added a seat to my Recon. Can we ride double?
A: You can only ride 2 up if the machine is built to ride 2 up from the factory.
Q: Drinking a little OK?
A: NO. Alcohol of any kind is forbidden on the trails. It can not be in your possesion, in your box, whatever. You gotta keep in mind that the Rangers patroling Hatfield are WV State Police trained, and have the same powers of arrest.
Q: Can we ride at night?
A: The Hatfield trails are ONLY OPEN from sunrise to sun set. No night riding is allowed.
Q: What do those NO ENTRY signs mean?
A: They only mean Hatfield's system does not go there. It is NOT a no trespassing sign. Read it, and then see UDT section below.

Now for the User Defined Trails (UDT's)
Q: Are there any rules?
A: YES. 2 of them. Don't open any gates or cut any fences. Obeying the rare no trespassing sign is a given. There are so many trails to ride, why try to go into places that you will not be welcome? Showing a little bit of common sense and courtesy to the locals goes a longways too.
Q: Are there any maps?
A: NO, but an extensive library of GPS tracks is available. For free.
Q: Can you get into a town for fuel and food via these UDT's?
A: YES. Quite a few more towns than Hatfield.
AS SEEN ON TV, Hatfield management and Brian Fisher made it into Welch WV. No Hatfield system serves Welch. I thought that was very interesting!!
Q: How do we know where we are?
A: No matter where you are:
Q: I can't get any info on these UDT's on Hatfield's forum. They don't seem to like anybody even mentioning them. Where do I go for more information?
A: Visit quadcrewriders.com and atvwv.com for candid discussions of non Hatfield riding areas.
Suggestions are welcome!!
