| I ended up like that once, but I didn't have such a happy ending. A bunch of us went riding at Rocky Run Trail, near Harrisonburg, Virginia 2 years ago this week-end. There was me, my 2 sons, my daughter-in-law, 2 of my grandsons, and my granddaughter-in-law. Me and my youngest son had ridden these trails the month before, so we knew what we were getting into. The trails are basically old fire roads, but there is a cut through from one to another at the bottom of Dictum Ridge. This cut through is steep, rocky, and technical, with a creek crossing about mid way. Every thing was going great, until we got to the cut through. There was one spot where you had to go almost straight down, then make a hard left at the bottom. When I approached this spot, I squeezed the right brake lever, but inadvertently also squeezed the throttle with it. The throttle had an extension on it, and I was wearing gloves, so I did not feel it. Of course, my Honda jumped forward, and there was my granddaughter-in-law, standing in the trail working her ATV through the turn. Instinctively, I veered to the right, to avoid hitting her. My right front tire hit a large boulder, which overturned my Honda. The Honda rolled over a full turn and a half, with me on it. It only stopped when it hit a small tree, and I was trapped under it, with gas trickling down on me. Everyone grabbed the Honda and rocked it, where upon I came loose and slid another 15 feet down the mountain. Even though I was in considerable pain, I remember looking up, and praying the small sapling the Honda was leaning against would hold, and not let it come tumbling down on me! But they winched it back, so I was no longer in danger from it. The next problem was to get me back up. The pain was pretty intense, and I could not stand, let alone walk. So my son cut some poles with his machete, and they made a stretcher, of sorts, which I was tied to. Then, I was winched up the mountain to the trail. One of my grandsons, and my daughter-in-law were sent to the parking lot to call for an ambulance, and everyone else helped to get me out. At first, they tried dragging the stretcher behind an ATV, but the roughness and steepness of the terrain made that almost impossible. Besides, my grandson joked, I would probably drown crossing the creek. So then I was tied on the back rack. Even that was very difficult, because going up the mountain, the front wheels would lift off the ground. So my oldest son got on the 4-wheeler, and he backed it out of there! That had to be really hard, on that very technical trail. Finally, 4 hours later, we reached the fire road, and the ambulance was there waiting. Thank God they had 4-wheel drive, and were not afraid to use it. At the hospital, it was discovered my upper femur was broken into 3 pieces. The doctor put 3 rods in it, and I spent a week in the hospital. Than 3 weeks re-hab in a nursing home and I was home for Thanksgiving. But it was 3 more months before I could ride again. - Attachments
